About

Cultures of Soul Records was founded in 2010 by Boston DJ and record collector Deano Sounds, out of an ambition to start a sustaining record label in the post-record industry era. It was also a dream of his since his early childhood when he first discovered music. The format and artistic direction of the label was formalized after Deano spent years crate-digging and DJing.

From its meager beginnings in 2010, which saw the release of a number of rare soul and funk 7-inches, Cultures of Soul quickly went on to sign some of the staple artists on their roster including Evans Pyramid and Stanton Davis. The label moved from strength to strength by releasing funky music from all over the globe, starting with the Bollywood filmi disco compilation Bombay Disco and continuing with compilations that focused on unearthing disco/boogie/funk/soul tracks from the Caribbean, Brazil and South Africa, all with the dancefloor in mind.

Cultures of Soul's releases have been championed by the likes of DJs all over the world including: Antal, Palm Trax, Hunee, Gilles Peterson, Craig Charles, Andrew Weatherall, Tim Sweaney, Floating Points, David Rodigan, Jeremy Underground, Africaine 808, Sol Power All Stars DC, Ruf Dug, Gerd Janson, Bosq, DJ Andy Smith, Mr. Scruff, DJ Kon, Soul Clap DJs, Rahaan, Mathieu Schreyer and many more.

In 2015, Cultures of Soul released the critically acclaimed Boston Creative Jazz Scene album and companion book. In the following years Cultures of Soul released Boogie Breakdown, Greg Belson's Divine Disco, and Tokyo Nights, all unearthing and bringing to the world selections of music which had never been curated before. The label continues to spread the Cultures of Soul sound everywhere, discovering and releasing soul music of all diasporas!
